EU–US Trade Deal: What’s In and What’s Out

The European Union and the United States have finally struck a deal to cool down trade tensions—but not everyone is getting what they wanted.

The agreement, first announced in late July, centers on cutting tariffs. The EU will scrap duties on American industrial goods, while the US will slash tariffs on European cars, dropping them from 27.5% to 15%. This move prevented an even harsher scenario—Trump had threatened a 30% tariff on nearly all EU imports.

Winners and Losers in Food Trade

While pork, dairy, and even products like potatoes and tomatoes got some concessions, the deal left out big-ticket items like beef, poultry, rice, and ethanol. In short: US farmers won a few new openings, but not in the most profitable categories.

A Commission official explained that these exclusions were intentional, calling beef and poultry “defensive interests” Europe wasn’t ready to open up. Instead, the EU offered smaller, less costly commitments—like lower tariffs on pizza ingredients, cocoa, and certain pork products.

What This Means for Both Sides

  • For Europe: Most industrial goods were already tariff-free, so the immediate effect is limited. But the big prize is avoiding a trade war.

  • For the US: Farmers get some small wins, carmakers get tariff relief, and Washington maintains higher tariffs on many EU exports.

  • For both: The deal may not be balanced, but it buys stability—for now.

What’s Next

The EU’s proposal still needs approval from member states and the European Parliament, a process that could take weeks. And with Trump warning about new tariffs on digital services, the calm may not last long.

👉 In short: Europe and the US avoided a trade blow-up, but beef and poultry producers are still waiting for their slice of the deal.
